Interview with SCM senior manager from Western Digital


      西部数据位于上海的晟碟半导体(上海)有限公司,在去年下半年被授予中国首家 “可持续发展灯塔工厂”荣誉称号并入选全球灯塔工厂。

Western Digital is located in Sandisk Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., and was awarded the title of China's first "Sustainable Development Lighthouse Factory" in the second half of last year and was selected as a global lighthouse factory.

As a global data-centric hardware and service provider, Western Digital has always been at the forefront of innovation. The technology of the fourth industrial revolution has been fully applied in its intelligent manufacturing plant, especially the technological application of digital supply chain, which helps it to best implement the flow of people, materials and information throughout the whole process from the in-plant to the out-plant. 灯塔工厂物流的同与不同

Similarities and differences of Lighthouse factory logistics



      西部数据服务客户面向:超市、零售及全球买家,不同客户对产品的定制化要求较高,包括最终交付的包装、运输等。灯塔工厂在物流运作上应用了多种第四次工业革命技术,如仓库自动化机器人配送、自动标签机、手持 Tablet、库存盘点系统等。这些技术的应用,不仅为公司带来了大量成本节省,也为美国公司在全球半导体行业奠定领导地位。



Western Digital serves customers in supermarkets, retail, and global buyers, who have high demands for customized product requirements, including packaging and transportation for final delivery. The lighthouse factory has applied various Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies in logistics operations, such as warehouse automation robots, automatic labeling machines, handheld tablets, inventory check systems, and more. The application of these technologies has not only brought a lot of cost savings to the company but also established the US company's leadership position in the global semiconductor industry.



       灯塔工厂实行关灯策略来降低产品成本(包括运营成本、质量成本),相应的正如WDC在世界经济论坛里面所提到的,他们更需要全方位的人才,对综合性管理类、技术研发类的人才需求增加。这些人才需要关注浪费的减少、能源的效率。例如对供应链人才来说,不仅仅要求拥有生产管理知识,还要对供应链技术的应用有足够的了解。同时新技术的应用,对普通的操作工的技能要求也更高了,他们需要通过相应的培训获得一系列的操作证书或技能才能满足灯塔工厂运作的需要。



The lighthouse factory implements a "turn off the lights" strategy to reduce product costs (including operating costs and quality costs). Correspondingly, as WDC mentioned in the World Economic Forum, they need all-round talents who have comprehensive management skills and technical R&D skills. These talents need to focus on waste reduction and energy efficiency. For example, for supply chain talents, they not only need production management knowledge but also sufficient understanding of the application of supply chain technology. At the same time, the application of new technologies also requires higher skills from ordinary workers, who need to obtain a series of operation certificates or skills through corresponding training to meet the needs of the lighthouse factory's operation.




02

打造端到端可视化供应链

Create an end-to-end visual supply chain



      WDC开展第四次工业革命技术在供应链上的应用,其端到端可视性的供应链已经延展到客户及供应商端。针对不同的业务服务形态,应用不同的数据系统及数据建模来实现以客户为中心的微型供应链。例如在可视性方面,其shipment系统,能让出货时间、生产力、成本等信息很完善地在dashboard上展示出来。系统能根据预估的司机到位时间来提前准备好相应物品。系统数据可以实现国内外共享,能让订单处理在不同的环节及时获取不同的信息,以缩短订单履行周期。



WDC has implemented Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies in its supply chain and has extended its end-to-end visibility to customers and suppliers. Different data systems and modeling have been used to realize the customer-centric mini-supply chain for different business service forms. For example, in terms of visibility, its shipment system can display information such as delivery time, productivity, and cost very well on the dashboard. The system can prepare the corresponding items in advance based on the estimated driver arrival time. System data can be shared domestically and internationally, allowing order processing to obtain different information in different links to shorten the order fulfillment cycle.



      在内部供应链环节,也应用了诸多系统来提升效率降低成本,比如在采购环节,应用了晶圆物料预测系统,来指导未来几个月更加准确的的材料采购;在生产环节,利用自有机器人资源,自开发了智能化的工单展开系统,取代之前复杂的人工排产,帮助工人直接执行任务,安排生产,从而避免了人工的出错;在仓储服务环节,物联网的RFID技术得到广泛应用,操作效率和准确率大幅提高;大数据的应用更是在生产质量、仓库管理、生产制造预测方面发挥了重要作用。



In the internal supply chain link, many systems have been applied to improve efficiency and reduce costs. For example, in the procurement link, a wafer material prediction system has been used to guide more accurate material procurement in the coming months. In the production link, the company has used its own robot resources and developed an intelligent work order deployment system to replace the previous complex manual scheduling, which helps workers directly perform tasks and arrange production, thus avoiding human errors. In the warehousing service link, RFID technology of the Internet of Things has been widely used, significantly improving operating efficiency and accuracy. The application of big data has played an important role in production quality, warehouse management, and production manufacturing prediction.



      实物流、信息流升级之后对资金流产生了很大的影响。比如系统的实施降低了生产报废率以及退货率;库存盘点系统、自动化shipment系统保证了及时交付,提升了买家的服务级别,提高了库存周转率,最终降低了成本。



Physical flow, information flow upgrade after the capital flow has a great impact. For example, the implementation of the system has reduced the production scrap rate and the return rate; Inventory counting system, automated shipment system ensures timely delivery, improves buyer's service level, improves inventory turnover, and ultimately reduces cost.



      总之,WDC非常注重技术,在全球包括中国、美国、印度部署了大规模服务器集群,AWS云设施,去处理对应日常工作,执行日常任务,这也使得WDC在当前半导体行业显示出其不可小觑的竞争优势。



In short, WDC attaches great importance to technology. It has deployed large-scale server clusters and AWS cloud facilities in the world, including China, the United States and India, to deal with corresponding daily work and perform daily tasks, which also makes WDC show its competitive advantage in the current semiconductor industry.




03

面临的挑战与未来规划

challenges and future planning



      22年发布的《美国芯片与科学法案》,有助于包括WDC在内的芯片半导体公司在全球的发展,有助于美国人就业,有助于建设高科技驱动的供应链,从而获得经济的增长。从民生到高科技,各个行业都需要芯片的加持,这是人类迈向第四次工业革命的根本,促进美国生产制造的动力,使更多的人参与到芯片制造中来。



The U.S. Chip and Science Act, released in 22, helped chip and semiconductor companies, including WDC, grow globally, create jobs in the United States, and build a high-tech driven supply chain, thus generating economic growth. From people's livelihood to high technology, various industries need chip support, which is the basis of human towards the fourth industrial revolution, promote the power of production and manufacturing in the United States, and enable more people to participate in chip manufacturing.


      

得益于稳定的客户及对WDC产品的认可,包括在供应商管理方面做的相当不错,当前面临全球芯片去库存、业绩下滑及降薪潮的形势,对WDC的影响并不是特别大。但WDC在供应链方面依然面临着各种挑战:如自动化科技方面的转型,需要开发新系统比包装、标签系统,去考虑节省更多的成本; 在生产制造的过程中,需要继续注重经济增长、成本降低、可持续发展、安全方面的一些东西。



Thanks to stable customers and recognition of WDC products, including doing a good job in supplier management, WDC is not particularly affected by the current situation of global chip destocking, declining performance and wage cuts. However, WDC still faces various challenges in the supply chain. For example, the transformation of automation technology requires the development of new systems to save more costs than packaging and labeling systems. In the manufacturing process, we need to continue to focus on things like economic growth, cost reduction, sustainability, safety.


    

对于未来,WDC将在倡导利用云计算、实现数据价值,寻求新的业务点,与国内客户进一步挖掘等方面寻求更多的突破。虽然WDC当前很多项目方案的实施已经获得显著业绩,但依然处在转型阶段,未来将借助更多科技制造的力量,去完成供应链的转型。



In the future, WDC will seek more breakthroughs in advocating the use of cloud computing, realizing data value, seeking new business points, and further exploring with domestic customers. Although WDC has achieved remarkable achievements in the implementation of many current project schemes, it is still in the transition stage. In the future, it will rely on the power of more scientific and technological manufacturing to complete the transformation of supply chain。
