Strategic Management of Operations

课程介绍:

Strategic management of operations has indeed become a topic of increasing importance in recent years. However, operations do not become a strategic weapon by accident. It requires deliberate managerial actions that are designed to bring the operations system under the direction and discipline of competitive strategy. The old view of operations as the task of running a comparatively static production/service facility has given way to one characterized by a need for renewed flexibility, relentless improvement, and the development of new capabilities. The search for new sources of competitive advantage that are harder to replicate has become even more difficult in the era of the “new normal” characterized by:

  • mounting pressures of increasing customer expectations
  • global competition
  • low (effectively negative) interest rate environment
  • low growth world with greater vulnerability to domestic and/or external financial and other forms of instability
  • high unemployment rate

There will be two other issues that will be integral parts of this course.

1.       Operations strategy across sectors: Although there is some similarity in terms of operations strategies across sectors, each sector also has its idiosyncracies. We will be discussing case studies dealing with firms across a number of sectors and a large part of this discussion will focus on the challenges/opportunities at the firm level as well as sector level. The guest speakers have also been selected to expose students to the operations strategy related issues across a variety of sectors.

2.

Value chain analytics and financial impact of operations strategies: We need to keep in mind that for an operations strategy to be effective it has to significantly and visibly impact the financial performance of a firm. The understanding and investigation of this issue will also be a vital part of this course. Specifically, we will discuss what are the different types of operational metrics that indicate (or has a close relation to) the financial performance of a firm and what financial statements can reveal about the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of an operational strategy.
